Mass Protests in Canary Islands Against Overtourism

Tens of thousands of demonstrators in Spain's Canary Islands protest against mass tourism, calling for changes to the current model that is overwhelming the archipelago. The protesters want limits on visitors, eco tax to protect the environment, and measures to address housing crisis caused by tourism.

Illegal Migrant Crossings in Europe

Frontex border control agency reported record high illegal migrant crossings on the West African route to Spain’s Canary Islands and the Eastern Mediterranean route. Majority of illegal arrivals in the Canary Islands were from Mali, Senegal, and Mauritania. Eastern Mediterranean route saw 13,700 arrivals of mostly Afghan, Egyptian, and Syrian migrants. Overall attempted illegal entries into the EU decreased by 12% compared to last year. However, the Mediterranean still experienced a high number of deaths.

Migrant Boat Tragedy in Spain's Canary Islands

Two bodies found in migrant boat heading to Spain's Canary Islands, with 5 other deaths reported. 38 survivors rescued, with some in critical condition. Increase in migrants from West Africa prompts EU partnership with Mauritania to address the issue.
