Envigo fined $35 million for violating animal welfare and environmental laws
Envigo, a company that owned a breeding facility in Virginia, has agreed to pay a record $35 million in fines for violating animal welfare and environmental laws. The company pleaded guilty to charges related to failing to provide adequate veterinary care and staffing for beagles at the facility, as well as unlawfully discharging wastewater into a local waterway. Thousands of beagles were rescued from the facility, and the company must pay fines and make improvements to its other facilities as part of the settlement.
