World War II Navy veteran dies at 102 while traveling to France for D-Day 80th anniversary event. Robert Persichitti was a WWII Navy veteran who witnessed the raising of the U.S. flag at Iwo Jima and served as a Radioman 2nd Class on the USS Eldorado. He passed away peacefully in Germany after falling ill on the way to Normandy.
