The History of Thanksgiving: Sarah Josepha Hale's Influence
Sarah Josepha Hale campaigned for a national day of thanksgiving during the Civil War and wrote a letter to President Lincoln in 1863. Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national holiday five days after reading her letter. The Thanksgiving story we know today was influenced by Hale's efforts.
