The Opening of the Golden Gate Bridge

The Golden Gate Bridge, a modern feat of engineering during the Great Depression, opened to the public on May 27, 1937. The first day of opening was reserved for pedestrians who paid a toll of 25 cents to cross the bridge. The bridge is now free for pedestrians but cars pay a toll of $9.40 to travel into San Francisco.
