Impact of Record-High Ocean Temperatures on Coral Reefs

Record-high ocean temperatures are threatening coral reefs worldwide, with around two-thirds of reefs experiencing heat stress at levels high enough to cause bleaching. The impacts have been widespread, with bleaching occurring in at least 62 countries and territories since February 2023.

Global Coral Reef Bleaching

Global coral reefs are experiencing bleaching for the fourth time due to warming ocean waters caused by climate change. Coral bleaching occurs when stressed coral expel the algae that are their food source and can lead to their death. Efforts are being made to protect coral reefs and reduce carbon emissions.
